The small crossover segment in South Africa1
There is an increasing trend of small crossovers competing for the marketplace in South Africa. The Kia Seltos was launched at the start of 2020, followed by attractive sales. Hot on its heels is the Indian-manufactured SUV called Sonet, posing a serious challenge to the Ford EcoSport, Suzuki Vitara Brezza, Toyota Urban Cruiser, and the Honda WR-V. This segment will expand even further with the launches of the Nissan Magnite and Renault Kiger later this year.
What is the engine like in the Kia Sonet? 1
The Kia Sonet has a 1.5-litre, naturally aspirated petrol engine, generating an output of 80 kW power and 144 Nm torque via a 6-speed manual transmission. Such cars achieve 0 – 100 km/hr in 11.3 seconds, but the CVT-equipped automatic manages a slower 11.8 seconds.
LX versions of the Sonet1
Electronic stability control, ABS brakes, and hill assist control, the car’s safety is taken care of, with two front airbags as a standard feature.
What about the EX trim? 1
This higher version is equipped with a leather-trimmed steering wheel and gear knob, rear park distance control, 16-inch alloy wheels, front fog lights, side indicator lights and roof rails.
How is the interior? 1
The Sonet’s first impression is that it looks great as a small SUV. The interior is of high quality, a typical characteristic of Kia. Despite the car’s size, the interior affords amazing space, which is more than enough for heads, shoulders, and legs. The boot comes with a whopping 392 litres of space.
What about driving the Sonet EX? 1
Changing gears with the 6-speed manual is excellent, but drivers may forget to change into 6th or top gear due to exceptional soundproofing. Five-speed gearbox versions are also available, but the extra 6th gear should help the fuel economy. According to the onboard computer, test drivers found fuel consumption to be 5.9 litres/ 100 km.
How much does the Sonet cost? 1
Prices range from R264 995 for the Kia Sonet 1.5 LX manual model to R305 995 1.5 EX CVT model.
