There is something about an extremely fast car that fascinates us. Perhaps it just symbolises sheer power that man has managed to harness in a focused way. See what you think of the ten fastest cars available in South Africa.
1. Porsche 911 Turbo S
The Turbo S is available in two guises, namely, the Coupé and the Convertible. The car has a twin turbo-charged 3.8-litre flat-6 engine with an output of 427 kW. This high output can be attributed to the larger compressors of its new turbochargers. The Coupé accelerates to 100 km/h in 2.9 seconds, and reaches a top speed of 329 km/h. According to Porsche, fuel consumption has been reduced due to changes in the electronic control of the engine and transmission. Gear change mappings have also been altered. Four modes are available: Normal, Sport, Sport Plus, or individual. The Sport Chrono Package has a button, which, when pushed, gives the car immediate acceleration for as long as 20 seconds.
2. Nissan GT-R
This car manages a top speed of 315 km/h, and accomplishes 0-100 km/h in 2.9 seconds. The Nissan has been manufactured to be driven under real, existing conditions. This car has four seats. The twin-turbo, V6, 3.8-litre engine is connected to a rapid-shifting automated manual gearbox, and generates 408 kW of power. Furthermore, it has an advanced 4-wheel drive system and luxurious, well-equiped interior.
3. Mercedes-Benz AMG GT R
This amazing car, which is considerably more powerful than the GT S, has a V8, 4-litre, 430-kW petrol engine, and a top speed of 318 km/h. It is able to accelerate to 100 km/h in 3.6 seconds. It has a standard AMG SPEEDSHIFT DCT 7-speed sports transmission, and weighs 1890 kg.
4. Audi R8 Coupe 5.2 FSI V10 Plus Quattro S Tronic
The Audi R8 Coupe 5.2 FSI V10 plus Quattro S Tronic has a top speed of 317 km/h, and is in the same class as that of Ferrari cars. It covers the 0-100 km/h in 3.5 seconds, without using any turbos. It has a 7-speed twin-clutch box, and a 5.2-litre, V10 engine delivering 455 kW of power. The body of this supercar is made up of a mostly aluminium spaceframe, and aluminium panels, with the rest consisting of carbon fibre. The car’s weight is a ridiculous 1555 kg, which is a massive achievement, when you consider the car has 10 cylinders, and is a 4-wheel drive.
5. Audi R8 Coupe 5.2 FSI V10 Quattro S Tronic
This two-door Audi reaches a top speed of 314 km/h, and can accelerate 0-100 km/h in 3.6 seconds. It boasts of a quatro permanent 4-wheel drive, and a 6-speed manual or a 7-speed S tronic transmission. It has a V10, 10-cylinder, 5.2-litre engine delivering 403 kW. It takes 19 seconds for the soft top to open or close, and this can be done even while the car is travelling at speeds of up to 50 km/h.
6. Audi R8 Spyder 5.2 FSI V10 Quattro S Tronic
Good to note is that the R8 Spyder is identical to the R8 Coupe, except that it is a convertible. The Spyder can do the 0-100 km/h in 3.8 seconds, and reaches a top speed of 311 km/h.
7. Mercedes-Benz Sl65 AMG
Being the top model in the SL series, this Mercedes can reach a maximum speed of 300 km/h, and cover 0-100 km/h in 4 seconds. The car is powered by a 5.5-litre, V12, bi-turbo engine delivering 463 kW. This power is directed to the rear wheels via a 7-speed multi-clutch automatic transmission (where the driver can also shift the gears).
8. Mercedes-Benz Sl63 AMG Performance
This beautiful machine is able to reach 300 km/h, and accomplishes 0-100km/h in 4.2 seconds. Although very similar to the SL65, the SL63 excels on the road. The SL63 has a 5.5-litre, V8 bi-turbo engine. Both the SL63 and SL65 have their top speeds electronically limited to 298 km/h. Power is channelled to the rear wheels via a 7-speed multi-clutch automatic transmission.
9. Jaguar XKR-S Coupe and Convertible
The 5-litre, supercharged V8 engine delivers 404 kW of power, enabling it to reach a top speed of 300 km/h, and taking 4 seconds to accelerate from 0-100 km/h. The car’s weight is much reduced to 1750 kg, due to aluminium panelling. The XKR-S is one of the most powerful of all the Jaguars ever built. Compared to the XKR, the XKR-S has larger brakes, and a modified adaptive suspension. The automatic transmission consists of 6 speeds. The car consumes 12.3 litres/100 km, probably on the freeway, with a higher figure required for town driving.
10. Jaguar F-Type V8 R Coupe
Launched in 2014, the Coupé has a remarkable resemblance to the E-Type Jaguar. The V8, F-Type engine generates 404 kW, enabling it to have a top speed of 300 km/h, and to accelerate from 0-100 km/h in 4.2 seconds. The car has an 8-speed, automatic/manual sequential gearbox. The sides of the body shell are made of a single aluminium panel, providing the car with enormous rigidity. It is interesting to note that the E-Type had a straight 6-cylinder, 3.8-litre engine, with a power output of 197 kW. Its top speed was 240 km/h, making it the fastest car in the world at that time. The F-Type R has an electronic-active differential.
